Saruus I've never tried Hirst mold blocks, they're more expensive than anything I'd need them for. My biggest problem with them is that everything always looks so uniform, none of the terrain pieces have any character. Which is great but for something that costs so much time, money, and energy, it should have character. You can fix this simply by smashing whatever you build with a hammer, but at that point, why bother?
On the other hand, you could use pink foam to cheaply and quickly carve out almost anything that you would use the basic Hirst blocks for.
There is only so much you can do with pink foam, and if you were to use Hirst for things like doorways and frames, or windows, or accent features, it'd be worth the extra money in my opinion.
tl;dr Hirst would be great for accents but entire structures made solely from them tend to look plain and generic.
